Images in en ePub

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to put together a non-fiction book with some images. The layout is great when I convert the file to PDF; however, when I export the file to ePUB (no matter which ePUB template I use) the images end up all over the place. Some images are far away from the text – resulting in a big block of nothing – and others are touching the text.

Any tips on how to deal with this is appreciated as I’d like to offer both formats.

Thank you!

Hi! :sun_with_face:

That’s awesome!

If you’re happy with the way your PDF turns out, I suggest working on a copy of your project specifically for the EPUB format. This way, any adjustments won’t impact the PDF version. :nail_care:

It sounds like the pictures are anchored to text paragraphs. When the text shifts to fit smaller screen sizes, the pictures get shuffled around as well.

To view the pictures’ anchors, go to “View” → “Show Invisible Elements”.

:bulb: The Anchor point is there to keep the picture close to its parent text, so if you add or remove text around them, they stick together.

Usually pictures are anchored to the beginning of a paragraph, but if that’s not the case, or the paragraphs are very long, you can move the anchor point by dragging the picture on the page.

:handshake: If you take a screenshot of your document in Papyrus Author and in the e-book creation preview, that’ll help in giving more detailed tips. :100:

:dart: If the pictures are too big for an epub and they are cut off:

  1. Double-click a picture to open its settings.
  2. In the “E-book/HTML” tab, you can set how large the picture should be relative to the page, instead of a pixel value.
  3. :white_check_mark: Click Apply after making any changes.

This can help a ton, especially with smaller screens and big pictures.

Try adding some padding to the pictures by following these steps:

  1. Double-click on a picture
  2. Go to the “Text Wrap” tab
  3. Add a small value to the “Minimum left/right distance” option
  4. Click Apply.

Let me know if this helps, and we can go into more detail if you take a few screenshots, or you can also send the document or a page of it over for even more thorough inspection. :mag:
