Some how the page headers got removed. I can’t figure out how to put them back in. I need the author on the left and the book title on the right. I know this should be simple, but I can’t find it.
Perhaps you just turned off the display of headers and footers.
- Open Document > Page Layout …
- Go to Page Numbering
Usually the first page number is 1 and headers and footers start at page 1 as well. The checkbox should be checked here.
Check Document > Document Properties if the title and author fields contain the desired information.
The header area needs some height greater than zero. Check this at Document > Page Layout > Header area. Something like 0.5 inches or 10 to 15 mm should be fine.
With the Page Layout dialog open, click on “Master Pages” and select the Standard master page or another master page and click on “Edit Master Page”. The document window will show a grey rectangle instead of the text and you should see space above for the header area. Activate View > Show Invisible Elements to see a frame around the header area. You can scroll up in this view to see if there are other master pages present which may have headers (or not).
If the header area is empty, right click into it and select “Other Variable Titles …”. Under “Reference to” select “arbitrary expression”, enter DOC_AUTHOR in the text field below, and click “Add”. The autor name should appear as entered under Document > Document Properties.
In the header area, place the text cursor to the right of the author name and press the tab key on the keyboard. Click in the ruler above the text to insert a tab position (a small triangle). Click on the tab position again to change it into a “right tab”. Move the triangle to the right margin of the header area.
Right click in the header area near the right margin and insert another “arbitrary expression” but this time DOC_TITLE.
Left click in the grey area and select “Back to Main Text” to get back to your text.
If you see more than one master page above, check the header area on these and also check the assignments of document pages to master pages. Some master pages intentionally do not have headers or footers because they are used for title pages, cover pages or empty pages where the headers are not needed. See Document > Page Layout > Assign Page Range.
P.S.
The above is the classic manual approach to changing things. I forgot about the new book designer of Papyrus 12 where you can do this:
- Open Author > Book Designer
- Click on Page Setup: Content
- Select Header Left and Right
- Left Side: Author Name
- Right Side: Book Title
- Apply
