Questions about the databases

First, thanks for the software!

Now to my question: I have characters and things and items, etc. I’m trying to use the database features of Papyrus. It’s a bit confusing, though.

First, I have like a long name in a language that I don’t want to type out whenever I use it. Can I double click or something to have that field from a character or item sheet be entered into my document? Or even set up some sort of quick text entries to save myself some typing?

Second: how can I handle duplicate names or items? Let’s say two characters have the same nickname, but they show up in different parts of my story. “Junior” is found in chapters 1-7, say, before he dies heroically. Later on, another “Junior” shows up. How can I use the character sheets to handle this situation? Same with items that might have a “common name.” For an example, Bilbo’s sword from the Hobbit is named “Sting.” But if he had had a scene being chased by bees, “Sting” would be used, and not refer to the sword.

Third: How should I handle changes in a character? My story starts with my heroine age 17, let’s say, and then she has a birthday party and is now 18 for the last half of the book. How should the character sheet handle something like that? Or other items that change: the “magic word” to open the chest changes after the wizard respells it or something.

I’m hopeful I’m just missing something easy that answers these questions. Thanks in advance!

Good questions! Let’s see…

No need for a sheet here, I’ve got a neat solution! :computer:

If you go “Edit” → “Text Macros”, you can create your own shortcut for typing out those long names.

Separating them from your normal text, you could put #name as the shortcut, and then the full name in the
Text field.

In my example below, I would type in #longjohn, and the full name is inserted:

Set up your macro, click “Apply”, and you’re good to go.

Interesting case!

Right now, if you create two character sheets with the exact same name (for example, both called Junior), automatic linking will always connect to the first one you created.

So, having two characters with the exact same name doesn’t work with Character Sheets. You can still have them as separate sheets, but the automatic linking and previewing the character when you hover on the name won’t work.

If you’ve got two characters with “Junior” in their names (like John Junior and Matt Junior), linking works correctly when you use the full name in the text.

:bulb: You can have multiple names for one character sheet, just separate them with a comma, for example “John, John Junior, Jonathan”. Papyrus will recognize all of them as the same character.

For your question about the sword named Sting and bees, it’s no problem! :honeybee:

The Item sheets follow capitalization of the name, so having the word “sting” in there won’t mix things up:

You can rename and add new fields to the character, item and location sheets by clicking the pen-and-paper icon on the top corner of a sheet.

All fields in the sheets are freeform text, so you can use them however makes sense for your story.

For example, you could:

  • Add a field like Age (Part I) and Age (Part II)
  • Add a “Age Development”
  • Create a Before / After Event field

There’s no automated time tracking feature in the Sheets, but I’m sure you’ll find a workflow that works!

Let me know how it goes!
