Typesetting, Fonts & Stuff

Hey all,

Running through my own final edit before I send my text off to get some test prints done for my beta readers, and this is my first time, so I’m little daunted!

This is really a question about how much I should “dictate” and what’s best left to the final copyedit and typeset choices for the printers. My printer does offer a basic once over for light copyedit and setting up the document, but wanted to get the thoughts of the community on how far I should do in making specific requests for fonts, layout and so on and so forth. Can I just throw them the PDF in a rough idea of what’s needed (i.e. page breaks, titles, and “put this graphic around about here”) and leave things like fonts, margins and colour matching etc. all to them, or is it reasonable of them to expect I’ve got all that off exactly as needed, and they just give it the once over and do the final tweaks for their print process?

Hi @Syulang ,

if you’re publishing with a trade publishing house, you leave it up to them. If you’re self-publishing or working with a distributor, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. So best check your contract with the printing house for details.
