Writing a Series

I wrote a book for my walking group back in 2018. Then in 2022 I wrote a time travel book that brought in my main character and basically gave her a new life. Fast forward to 2025 where I decided to take that main character back to where she really met the group and create a series of books that will also bring in parts of the time travel story.

So, for this new series, I want to have all the books connected along with the characters. How can I do that? I also want to disconnect the original book, as that is being retired.

Hopefully that makes sense.

Oh, what a cool start for a series! Sounds like an awesome project. :star_struck:

Connecting the original book’s characters to the sequels (and prequels! :hourglass: :milky_way:) is pretty straightforward.

Papyrus saves all the Character Sheets (+ item and location sheets if you got them) in your project’s folder as a database file, so sharing characters across projects just needs linking that same database file to the next book.

Option 1: When creating a new book

In the fourth step of creating a new book, you’ll see an option to link an existing Character Database into your book:

After clicking there, navigate to your original book’s folder, and double click on “My Characters.pb” in the “My Characters” folder.

:bulb: by default, your book is stored in your computer’s “Documents” folder under “Papyrus Documents”.

Option 2: If you’ve already started a book, and want to add the characters in:

  1. In Papyrus’ top toolbar, go “Author” → “My Project” → “Path to My Characters…”

  2. Click “Select” and navigate to the original book’s folder

  3. Choose “My Characters.db”

No need to disconnect the first book from the characters. The other books will use the original Character Database, and any additions you make to the Character Sheets will automatically update in the original book’s database as well. :bank:

:bulb: When you’ve finished a book, you can make a quick-and-easy backup of your whole book project with the databases and all included by right-clicking on the book in the Start Screen, and choosing “Save project as Zip”.
Then, you can save this zip file in your backup location (cloud, hard drive) and have the full project backed up. :minidisc:

Let me know how it goes, and have fun! :sun_with_face:
