Would you consider a "hobbyist price" in the future?

hi!

i’m currently giving papyrus the 8 day trial and it’s neat software! i was previously looking at vellum for book publishing but that would require that i get a mac too because i’m a pc guy.

but i have to say that the price for papyrus 12 is an insurmountable hurtle for me. i’m not a professional author, i haven’t really started writing anything yet, and frankly, i fully expect that i will never make any money whatsoever from any books i self-publish unless i really twist the arms of cousins to buy a copy : ) . and that’s if i ever finish anything at all…

but i have a kind of malady where before i start, i need to know that i have the way all paved up to the finish - all the way up to producing publishable output. yeah i know - it’s a sickness : ) . but i have a feeling i’m not the only one.

would you consider having different price tiers for non-professional “hobbyists” like me? there are other kinds of software that charge a lower price before a person makes $X amount of money? so like a lower price for papyrus for authors who’ve never made over $1000 for their work or something like that (lol or would that put too many potential customers in that category?)? like about half the current price would be do-able for me personally - what i could justify to myself as someone newly (inadvertently) retired. on a less selfish level, you might actually make more money in sales by getting more people through the door too.

anyway, no problem if this can’t be considered. it’s your software after all, that you’ve evidently put a ton of work into and you are absolutely free to price as you see fit and keep in the professional tier.

i just figured it can’t hurt to ask. : )

thanks much and great work!

Hi @jin, welcome to the Community!

Glad you’re trying Papyrus out! :star_struck:

If you’ve got a work-in-progress book you want to bring in, you can turn a Word (.docx) into a Papyrus file with the Start Screen’s “Import Project” feature.

Thanks for your thoughtful question! Right now, there are no plans for a different pricing tier like you described, but we’re listening and really appreciate your feedback.

Makes a lot of sense. Having the tools sorted out helps keep the focus on writing.

There’s a huge amount of features for different stages of writing, all the way to the publishable output.

You mentioned you just started writing, but if you want to play around and see your text in different publishable versions, try out the Book Designer. You can do different trim sizes, try out headers, footers and all things layout!

You can also print out PDF outputs with the PDF export button in the toolbar.

Have fun with Papyrus! :books:

I recently asked something similar to the official email. This time I will repeat the question, in abbreviated form: I am a licensed user of Papyrus 9. I am neither German nor English-speaking (probably one of the few who use the Cyrillic script), and therefore I do not use the parts related to stylistic analysis and similar features and tools. The question is: is it possible to have some kind of abbreviated version of Papyrus for users like me, which would be the same or similar to the free version of Papyrus Author that existed until recently, at a price that would be significantly lower than the current one. So without the features for stylistic analysis, etc. Thank you.

Hi, good to hear from you!

Ah I see. I get that some language-related features, like the Style Analysis, will not come into play for you if you’re not writing in English. There’s no workaround for that at the moment, but there’s still a ton of of cool features in Papyrus you can use in any language!

At the moment Papyrus 12 gives you the full package in English and German, and there aren’t plans for a version without the writing or editing tools.

By the way, have you tried creating a custom dictionary for your language? Here’s a previous thread on it: Spell Check in other languages please

Sekako, jas ḱe prodolžam da go koristam Papirus i vo idnina.

Thank you for your answer. It is true that Papyrus, apart from the tools for various checks in German and English, has a large number of functions that are interesting and useful for everyone. That is why I have been using it since the mid-nineties (since the Atari versions). Also, since I consider myself a relatively advanced user, creating my own dictionary is not a problem for me. Although, I can do simple word checking in other applications. Of course, I will continue to use Papyrus in the future. I regret that the database section has been almost completely neglected for decades. At least for me (a musicologist and music writer) it is extremely important and useful. Anyway, I wish you success in the further development of the application and I hope that at some convenient moment in the future (when the price will be adjusted to MY NEEDS and will be more affordable), I will pay extra for the current version. I wish all the best to the entire Papyrus team. On another occasion I will remind you of some universal needs and weaknesses (ifilter, section division within a document, hyphenation for other code pages, etc.).
